DocuID Desktop
The macOS and Windows app that locks files into portable .docuid envelopes and opens them in memory.
DocuID Desktop is the companion app for files that live outside the browser. Drop any
supported file in and it becomes a .docuid envelope: an AES-256 encrypted package you
can email, copy to a USB stick, or leave in an ordinary folder. Drop a .docuid in and it
opens read-only in memory after iVALT approval — nothing readable is ever written to disk.
Why the app instead of the website
| You want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Lock a file so it travels as one file | Desktop |
Open a .docuid someone sent you | Desktop |
| Double-click envelopes from Finder | Desktop |
| Encrypt a file fully offline | Desktop (Local Only) |
| Browse your vault and manage shares | Workspace app |
| Protect documents inside Office | Office Add-in |
The website keeps your vault, sharing, and activity. The desktop app handles the moment a file leaves that vault.
How it works
- Sign in once with your registered mobile number — the same iVALT approval as the website. Stay Unlocked skips the phone approval for 24 hours on that device.
- Protect a file: pick Protected in cloud, Device envelope only, or Local Only.
The app writes a
.docuidenvelope next to the original or in your output folder. - Open a
.docuid: the app verifies the envelope's integrity, checks your access, decrypts in memory, and shows it in a tab. Owners open instantly; recipients may wait for owner approval. - Share from the open document by mobile number or email — revoke anytime, even after the file has been forwarded.
System integration
- File association: the app registers as the handler for
.docuidfiles anddocuid://links, so envelopes open on double-click. - Finder / Explorer: on Windows, Encrypt with DocuID appears in the right-click menu when enabled at install time; on macOS a Quick Action is provided.
- Command line:
DocuID --encrypt <path>andDocuID --open <path>work from a terminal or script. - Recents: the app keeps your last 30 opened envelopes (⌘H) and macOS Dock recents.
Limits to know
- Intake accepts files up to 500 MB and around 30 file types — Office documents, PDF, images, audio, video, text, and archives.
- The viewer previews PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; other formats still decrypt and verify access but show no preview.
- Up to 8 documents stay open as tabs; decrypted copies live in memory only and are dropped when you quit.
- macOS and Windows. No Linux build, and no auto-update — install updates manually.
